Abstract

The aim of this article is both to describe and analyze the version of national history presented in Nossa Patria, narração dos factos da Historia do Brazil, atraves de sua evolução, com muitas gravuras explicativas, written by José Francisco da Rocha Pombo (1857-1933). The book, dedicated to elementary school, was first published in 1917 and remained in Cia. Melhoramentos’ catalog until 1970. It was adopted in most Brazilian sates and had 88 editions and 452 million books printed. Assuming that, during many years, Pombo’s little book contributed to build the idea that many Brazilians would have about their country, this article tried to outline the innovations that guaranteed the reprint of the book even after 1930, contrary to other books published at the time.
