Abstract
This article aims to present the concept of awareness in Freire's writings articulated with Brazilian historiography. The methodological approach was bibliographical research for this reflection: How was the concept of awareness (re)signified by Freire considering his experiences and work linked to the Brazilian historical contexts? Thus, we establish a dialogue between historical context and the term awareness with Freire’s use. We carried out the analysis under the critical eye of historical-dialectical materialism. We conclude that awareness is one of Freire's fundamental categories as it is a historical commitment, a requirement of and for the historical process of which we are part.
