Abstract
An issue that is currently arousing heated debates both in the social and in the academic and educational fields concerns the problem of the relationship between equality and difference, of politics of redistribution and recognition. According to Perucci (1999) we are experiencing a change in both the cultural and social climates. From a time when emphasis was placed on equality, frequently silencing and/or denying differences, the latter have become increasingly visible, even central, to the contemporary world. The challenge we are presented with is how to articulate equality and difference in the different social and educational contexts. The present study focuses on the issue of the relationship between education and difference(s), both in the context of elementary schools and universities. It is based on two research projects carried out by the research group on Daily Life, Education and Culture(s). It adopts the theoretical framework of critical multiculturalism and it promotes an intercultural education perspective.
