Abstract

The dialogue between anthropology and education refers to a long theoretical tradition, still little explored in Brazil. However, cultural issues increasingly pose a real problem to be faced by educators. Anthropology has sought to go beyond just the instrumental use of ethnography for educational research, bringing a real contribution to the political, social and cultural debate around education. We propose here to reflect on the place of the teacher in relation to cultural issues in the world of the classroom, especially how specific situations are encountered in schools and how educators outline strategies for dealing with cultural diversity in the classroom, thus performing their “magic”. We incorporate interviews with teachers in basic education, articulating this empirical material with anthropological theories that seek to deal with “complex” and multicultural societies.
